When Incandescents first came to market (1879):
- Only 14 years had passed since the American Civil War...
- There was no such thing as an "electricity grid," you know, the thing that brings power to your home or business...
- It would be another six years before automobiles...
- And still another 20 years before manned flight...
Incandescents vs. LED
An incandescent bulb takes 5X the power to produce the same light as an LED.
High Intensity Discharge
(Light created by electric discharge through plasma or poisonous gas...) These were released at the turn of the 20th century (and still contain poisonous gas to this day.)
When HID first came to market in (1901):
- Wilbur and Orville finally made that flight we were talking about...
- President William McKinley was assassinated (he used a new invention called the "telephone" to during his campaign...)
- It would be seven years until the Model-T automobile was released...
- There were only 45 states in the US...
HID vs. LED
Unlike HID lights, LED’s are manufactured without any harmful chemicals. HIDs begin to degrade the moment you turn them on, depreciating up to 50% over a short lifetime.
Fluorescents get power from U.V. short waves from phosphorus and mercury gases. Like HID, these also have short a short lifespan and contain hazardous materials.
When the fluorescents first came to market (1931):
- Penicillin had only been discovered three years prior...
- Thomas Edison passed away...
- The Empire State Building was completed...
- Superman wouldn’t be created for two more years...
- TV was only four years-old. (It had a screen smaller than five inches and would have cost you $19,829.10 adjusted for inflation)...
Fluorescents vs. LED
Fluorescents have been tested to contain even more poisonous gas than HIDs. Not to mention, their average lifespan of 250 days pales in comparison to the 11 years LEDs can last.
...a filament and halogen gas. These bulbs burn super bright and super hot. Wasted energy, anyone?

- Alaska was admitted as the 49th U.S. state...

Halogen vs. LED
LED lights utilize 95% of their energy to create efficient light–only 5% is ever lost. Ironically, halogen lights can only use 5% of their production energy with 95% going to waste.
Compact Fluorescents (CFL)
Compact fluorescent lights are a twist on fluorescent technology. They have a medium-based socket with a spiral design. When they break, the chemicals inside can endanger any products or people exposed...
When the compact fluorescent first came to market (1976):
- It was the bicentennial. Anyone remember the bicentennial?
- The first Star Wars began filming in Tunisia...
- Apple Inc., inventors of the first personal computer, was founded...
- The National Basketball Association (NBA) merged with the American Basketball Association (ABA)
Compact Fluorescent vs. LED
These might be the worst of any non-LED bulb, showing every symptom of old lighting technology. Compact fluorescent lights contain poisonous gases, they have a short lifespan AND have that tendency to break. They stand to destroy all the savings you might gain for slightly more efficient output than their predecessors... ...whereas LEDs can take beating, don't contain any poisons... You get the picture.
We hope at this point you've learned a bit about just how OLD that light is on your ceiling. You might even be ready to make the plunge to state-of-the art LED (...saving up to 90% on energy costs, not to mention less maintenance and better safety for your people and products...)
